At least 17
Palestinians were killed on Wednesday and over 200 others injured when
Israeli warplanes pounded a popular market in Shujaya neighborhood in
eastern Gaza City, a Palestinian health official said.
"This
is another horrific massacre by the Israeli army against armless
civilians in Gaza," Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qodra told Anadolu Agency.
Many of the victims were children and women, he said, noting that several wounded Palestinians are in a serious condition.
Rescue operations are still underway in the area, he added.
Eyewitnesses said that body parts are strewn in the site while several shops caught fire in the aftermath of the Israeli raid.
Since July 7,
Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip – from air, land and sea – with
devastating bombardments with the ostensible aim of halting rocket fire
from the strip.
